May the Fourth Be With You!!

Happy Saturday, Simon and Oliver peeps! Hope everyone is enjoying this spectacularly, beautiful day!

Today, we are celebrating the amazing Star Wars movie franchise! It all started in 1977, with the release of Star Wars, on May 25th. I remember the day well, as a 13 year old with all of my friends, excited to see what all the hype was about! Wow! We were not disappointed! Filmmaker George Lucas, took the world to distant galaxies, and introduced us to incredible hero's, and some dark villains! Following the story as the years progressed, with each new sequel, was awesome! It is not surprising that Star Wars is the second largest franchise in the world, and has the second largest fan base!

If you are a Star Wars fan, you will be familiar with the phrase "May the Force be with you". The pun, "May the Fourth be with you", was started by Star Wars fans, who chose to celebrate the films on this day, each year.

The first recorded reference of the phrase, was used on May the 4th, 1979, when Margaret Thatcher was elected as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The Conservatives, her political party, placed a congratulatory advertisement in the news, saying "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie."

In 2008, the first Facebook groups appeared, celebrating Luke Skywalker Day, with the same catchphrase. In 2011, the first organized celebration of Star Wars Day, took place here! In Toronto! Held at the Toronto Underground Cinema, festivities included a trivia game show, costume contest, and tribute films. There are many different celebrations that occur on this day each year, continuing the tradition!

Whether you are a Star Wars fan, or not... May the Fourth is a great day to remember this incredible legacy! Even if it's just to listen to yourself say the phrase! I giggle every time...May the Fourth Be with You!!
