When Day transforms into night... The Solar Eclipse

Monday, April 8th, 2024. 3:18 pm. The solar eclipse took place. The first visible Solar Eclipse in North America, since 2017. What a view we had of it here, in Southern Ontario. This rare, celestial event, turned our day into night, for just over three minutes. The temperature dropped, and all of the streetlights turned on! It was definitely something to experience!

I must admit, our dog Maggie was acting strangely all day. The animals always seem to know, when something out of the ordinary is occurring. Or should I say, ABOUT to occur.

It has been documented, that during a solar eclipse, most animals will begin their nighttime routines as totality approaches. Evening vocalists, such as frogs and crickets, may begin singing, while daytime vocalists, such as cicadas, may stop.

It has been noted as well, that bees will return to their hives, and nocturnal moths will take flight! Spiders that trap insects during the day, will begin taking their webs down during a solar eclipse. Birds and insects that migrate at night, have been shown to take flight during a solar eclipse!

Also, there is a threat that comes from the potential increase in animal-human interactions. Nocturnal animals will emerge at times, when humans are still very active! This can be very dangerous. We noticed that the coyotes who reside in the forest behind us, were out and about this afternoon!

So, to sum up the day... it was very exciting! Seeing our first solar eclipse! It is most likely the only one I will ever see, and I must say, I feel privileged. One more thing that I got to share, with the abundance of nature around me.
